We are looking for a *very part time* on site bookseller / retail team member immediately! This is a 3 hours a week position that can/may expand to 6 or even 9 hours a week as our budget and need grows. Please read this entire post first before applying / reaching out with questions thank you.
Compensation
Putting this up top because if it’s a deal breaker we don’t wanna waste your time!
- $23 per hour, adjusted on Jan 1st every year to match or exceed Seattle minimum wage increase
- 1 hour of paid sick leave for ever 40 hours worked
- No health, retirement, or other benefits
The following are not part of the compensation package because they exist to help staff do mandatory job duties such as “following store safety protocols” and “being able to recommend comics to customers”, therefore are not taxable benefits.
- Staff discount (mostly at the 20% range; there is no staff discount on Magic/Pokemon products)
- KN95 masks
As mentioned, this starts as a 3 hours a week position. Depending on store needs and budget it may expand, but realistically it will likely not be more than 6 hours a week consistently. Our budget is very small. Extra hours on a temporary basis may exist due to coverage needs or special events.
Job Duties
Mandatory job duties expected of all staff members:
- Keep store staff (including yourself) and cats safe
- Operate a retail environment including but not limited to selling things to customers
- Open/close store by yourself (literally a 5 minute process)
- Perform regular janitorial cleaning (including taking out trash and cleaning bathroom)
- Process inventory (including receiving, processing, and shelving) while respecting release dates
Non-mandatory job duties that can be added on based on staff experience and interest:
- Make marketing content for social media
- Run events like game nights or meetups
- Do graphic design and arts and crafts to make store prettier
- Demo board and card games
- Make purchase and stocking decisions
We’re a pretty small shop with 1 full and 1 part time person right now, so job duties are always negotiable.
Scheduling
We are open 3 to 9 on Thursday and Fridays, and noon to 6 on Saturdays and Sundays. Shifts will be scheduled based on staff availability but will always be during these regular hours. We’re happy to schedule around other jobs and responsibilities.
Expectations
These are things that we need from all staff members and are absolute non-negotiables. If you cannot do any of these we will not be able to hire you.
- Be over 18 years old and legally allowed to work in Seattle, WA, USA
- Not allergic to cats / can work in an environment with two potentially free roaming cats
- Willingness to ask for help and/or say no (including to customers and supervisors!) when something exceeds physical or mental comfort level
- Be able to lift, by yourself and without consequence, up to 60 lbs for a short period of time (e.g., from floor to table, across 20 ft, from table to hand truck)
- Be able to reach up to an elevation of 7 ft above ground, potentially with the help of a step ladder
- Be able to work in and navigate tight and cluttered spaces
- Be able to move furniture such as tables and chairs a short distance (less than 20 ft)
- Be able to learn and adapt to situations that can arise in retail
- Be able to read and communicate in fluent English and follow instructions
- Ability to use computers and do basic math (with a calculator)
- Enjoy reading regularly (not necessarily comics, but anything from novels to poetry to fanfics to webtoons)
- Enthusiasm in sharing what you love!
- Competency in working with people who are…
- LGBTQIA+
- not white
- disabled / neurodivergent
- children
- Comfortable with discussing topics that are in books we sell including but not limited to
- explicit sexual content, possibly containing various kinks and fetishes
- historic and current genocide and war crimes performed by countries such as the USA, Israel, and Japan
- fictional extreme violence, blood, and gore
- things that a left-leaning, queer/trans/poc-owned, bookshop would sell
- Interest in learning about things we sell and our community enjoys—it is NOT a requirement to be knowledgeable about comics, games, etc but the willingness to learn more about them and figure out what you yourself enjoy and would want to share to others is!
Everything else is negotiable! To reiterate: knowledge about comics and games is *not* a requirement. We’re not going to ask questions to prove anyone’s a “real comic person” or whatever.
We do not discriminate based on your race, skin color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, transgender status, and sexual orientation), gender, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, or any other legally protected status. We’re an equal opportunity employer.

Note for TCG players/collectors: Employment at Crow’s Nest comics does NOT guarantee or lead to the ability to purchase Magic/Pokemon products early or at a discount.
